NOW what?? - Queen of the First Grade Jungle

NOW what??

I had to get something up on those boards.

I am going to try the Daily 5 this year.  Want to hear my reasons? Okay, here it goes.

I am just a tad bit of a control freak.  I like for my kids to do the activities that I want them to do- in the exact amount of time that I give them- meeting my high expectations.

Doesn't always work out that way does it?? In fact, now that I read over that sentence, it really makes me sound like a brat.

This year- my goal is to let go a little bit. Math Work Stations started me down that path- now I just need to give it my all.  I feel like the Daily 5 will allow my kids to work at their own pace and on their own level in a much more manageable way.

What is the first thing that I do to get ready for the Daily 5?

Make 2 new pretty displays. Apparently it is all about my room right now :)

Want to see them in my room??? Well of course you do!

Love, love, love my additions of purple this year.

I also decided to do a smaller clipchart. In order to keep track of my kids, I will have them clip their names on this chart!

Yes, I included the smaller version in the download too!

And because I love you all... here is another version.

And last but not least...go check out Kelley's idea. I can't wait to see how excited my kids will get when they get REAL mail from California!

  4. I'm a bit of a control freak too :) I started trying the Daily 5 last year and mid year I started to vary it a little so that I could have some control over what they do. I gave them "jobs" they needed to complete--but they had 2 weeks to finish it. I created literacy games that had recording sheets that they kept in a folder. And, during that time (word work) they could do all the other fun word making activities. Work on writing was similar where they had some writing activities they HAD to complete. The reading ones were just reading and they did great with that. I really like how it worked out and am excited to see if it will work this year with my new kiddos or---if I'll have to figure things out all over again.... :)

Thanks for the adorable posters!! =)

    2. Aww! You're sweet! Thanks! :). When I found that clip art, I knew exactly what I wanted to do and didn't sleep till I finished it! I'm excited for it to be more "cute" this year! :)

I forgot to mention the tic-tac-toe menu I'm going to try that was in that post-but hopefully you saw that too :). I'm hoping it'll give them more variety and keep some of them from always going for the magnetic letters or the wiki stix. :). Time will tell!

      Thanks for stopping by!!! :)

  8. Katie,

You will love Daily 5 once you get into it. This will be my 6th year doing Daily Five. I did it for 4 years in third grade and this will be my second year doing it in first. I do it just like the sisters. I could not imagine ever doing centers/stations again. My kids even told me it was the best part of first grade because they had choice. I can't wait to hear how it goes for you.
